Open Source Consultant

Transitiv Technologies are an Open Source consultancy who specialise in support, training, consultancy and development for Linux, BSD, Open Source applications and network monitoring. We are looking for Open Source experts to increase capacity and add new expertise to our team.

A lot of our work is with Nagios, Icinga, Cacti, SNMP, Perl etc, so expertise in Nagios and at least familiarity with the others is essential. Familiarity with the Nagios/Icinga eco-system and complementary tools (NagVis, Merlin, Ninja, Thruk, Livestatus, PNP4Nagios, RRDtool etc), knowledge of how to write performant Nagios plugins (preferably in Perl or C) and experience with monitoring Windows, Unix and Cisco equipment are beneficial.

Experience with cloud hosting and devops tools such as Ansible, Puppet, OpenStack, LXC and Docker etc are beneficial.

Skills in other Open Source applications, graphing packages, programming languages, HA, load-balancing, virtualisation, SMTP, Ruby on Rails, Apache, Nginx, VPNs, networking hardware and version control are also welcome.

We're looking for reliable, professional people who already have proven Linux, Open Source and monitoring expertise, rather than people who will need to learn on the job.

Salary is negotiable depending upon level of experience. There's no necessity to be near the Midlands or London but we would at least like to meet you to discuss and preferably see what you've done in the past.

Industrial Work Placements

We offer a limited number of industrial work experience placements to school and university students.

School Work Experience

We work with clients for whom privacy and security are serious concerns, so we're not able to expose school work experience students to any customer work, therefore the main issue for us is whether a placement with us would be useful for you, rather than for us. As a minimum, we require that you are interested in Linux and Open Source and know what they are. Ideally you will have already used Linux and have some experience with programming.

University Industrial Placement Students

For university industrial placement students we request that applicants are already:

  • Regular Linux/Unix users
  • Familiar with networking concepts such as IP addressing, DNS and TCP/IP ports
  • Familiar with the Unix filesystem layout
  • Comfortable on the Unix command line
  • Proficient to an intermediate standard with one or more programming languages common on Unix, such as C, Perl, Python, Ruby and shell scripting
  • Have experience with running an Open Source server application such as Apache httpd, Nginx, Postfix, MySQL or PostgreSQL etc.
  • Competent with database theory and SQL
  • Engagement in the Linux/Open Source community will be viewed positively
  • An understanding of VPNs, networking hardware and version control are also welcome but not essential
