About Xen

Xen was originally developed at Cambridge University before being Open Sourced. Xen gained industry traction following the creation of a supporting company, XenSource, and its selection as the virtualisation platform of choice by Red Hat, Novell and Sun. While Xen itself remains Open Sources, XenSource was acquired by Citrix in 2007 as a core component of its vision for enterprise virtualisation services.

Xen is responsible for igniting the renaissance of x86 virtualisation, pioneering features which have since been adopted by commercial platforms such as the live migration of guests between host systems and paravirtualisation. Due to being Open Source, Xen is the default virtualisation layer in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise, resulting in large scale adoption and forming the basis for Amazon's cloud computing platform amongst others.

Xen has recently seen the release of version 4, which adds further enterprise features such as improved redundancy functionality, disaster recovery options and increased scalability to ensure it remains on the cutting edge of virtualisation trends.
